Why do military men need to have very short hair?

I understand they do it because it can be a hazard whilst on duty, but all they need do is introduce something like a sweatband that will prevent the hair being an obstruction.

The grooming standards for both men and woman should be the same because it is sexist and does not pose any potential threat if hair can be restrained. Hair is natural for both men and woman, so the same rules should apply? Why do military men need to have very short hair?
The requirements for military hair grooming standards are necessary

to maintain good order and discipline. Many styles of military haircuts

are acceptable by the Army, Navy, Air Force or USMC as long as they

are clean, neat and conservative. However, remember that all military

services have slightly different requirements for haircuts. Why do military men need to have very short hair?
It seems that few have read your question it does not mention a country. In some european countries long hair was allowed during conscription and looks terrible.People fought well with long hair for thousands of years and it was not until the end of the 19th century that short hair was brought in for hygiene reasons. As for uniformity in the British army certain regiments insisted on moustache ,sideburns and hair to the collar until the 1880s,in the Napoleonic wars Hussars wore long plaits and British infantry wore hair in que.It is often tradition and cultural few British soldiers would have hair cut as short as Americans who's military look ridiculous in the eyes of most of the world with their over the top haircuts.
because of long hours of use of the helmet, lice problems in foreign countires is possible, I had a SGT who caught some kind of infestation just by being in the feild. Then there is NBC, for proper fit of the NBC mask, one needs to have your hair short, women can always have a problem with this, but the military does not want their ewomen to go around looking liek a bunch of skin heads, so heance they are told to keep there hair above the collar or up. If there hair makes it impossible for them to properly fit an NBC mask then they die!!! Soem females will get away with extentions in their hair. The patrol cap was so much easier for hair styles, now that the army has gone to the barey, it is much harder to have extentions and keep hair extentions in the barey properly.
hi mate

it has nothing to do with grooming its hygiene

in the bad old day every Other guy would have head lice the best way to keep them under control was to have shaved heads

so as you can see on the t.v its become a bit of a fashone statment

plus there is a shortage of drinking water up in the small company locations
British soldiers must have cropped hair and remain clean shaven because in the event of biological or chemical attack, or battle, the masks wouldn't be air tight. That is the position now, but i'm uncertain what it used to be like. I'm assuming uniformity since WW1.
The romans started doing short hair so you couldn't grab thier hair from behind to expose the neck to an easy throat slitting.
shaving soldiers' hair is part of the army's tactics to take away their soldiers' personal identities so they take on the identity of being a soldier and so are more submissive to orders.
So they all look the same. Unity.

Women are in the army so it would seem like there is no descrimination based on sex, but there is because let's face it- men and women ARE different.
Political correctness has no place in the military. It isn't sexist, it's practical.
so that they don't spend half of their time in front of the mirror combing hair n applying hair gel.trying new hair styles n stuff like that.
Uniform appearance as well as hygiene. Injuries to the head are very common, easier to deal with in the field.

Plus you look well 'ard too!
The correct answer is to prevent nits and lice from nesting in long hair.

In the first world war poor hygiene led to many soldiers getting sick from louse and tick bites.
I agree....we should have women have really short hair also. That way they are as combat effective as men are!
Only during basic training, after that they can let it grow. 1983 101 airborne. GO SCREAMING EAGLES!! And god bless my fello soldiers that died in Granada.
Traditionally this started with the Romans. You don't want long hair or a beard in battle which can be grabbed and pulled.
You have obviously never fought in the field so you cannot know what field hygiene is like.
i guess hygiene and to make everyone the same in away, almost like a loss of identity.
I don't think you understand. There are regulations that they must follow and yes, they can grow their hair ';a few inches';.
So the enemy bitches cann't pull it
So they all can shine there heads up together, Unity.
long hair dont care
It's about breaking down people and rebuilding them from the ground up. Shaving their hair is like saying we're rebuilding you.

Do they not shave women's heads? I don't even know.... lol
Long hair would give them away in combat
makes them look sexier!

i dunno why!
