What's the best way to give my short hair the ';messy'; look without getting the shiny look that usually occurs?

Using gel or wax generally makes the hair look shiny and too forced, whereas using pomade and ';lighter'; things usually don't hold my hair in place for more than a couple of hours and it ends up falling over my eyes...What's the best way to give my short hair the ';messy'; look without getting the shiny look that usually occurs?

use hair glue. it comes in a yellow tube and works great, and its not shiny!
use hair wax :)
Get Garnier Fructis Surf Hair Texturing Paste. It's not shiny and doesn't even feel like you have it in your hair, has a great hold and has no scent. Hope this helps!
