and how come the policemen we see on the news always look really depressed and old? Its as if there are no young people in the police.Do men have to have short hair to join the british police?

Well. Those who would give interviews on tv would normally be senior officers and they wont be as young as that.
But if you take a look round the streets you will some pretty young officers out there.
I live in Staffordshire, England. Most of our police are quite young and very normal. As for the haircuts they have to be short and smart unless you a a woman in which case it would have to be up. I suspect the police you have seen on TV are the Chiefs who would be old and miserable but all bosses are !!!!! At least here if i have a problem i would know who to call for help. Each time i visit the USA i am confused by the various police forces that you have. There are Sherrifs, Marshals, Police, State Troopers etc etc...............why not just one law enforcment organisation?
